The Red Devils had been locked in fruitless negotiations with Real for months – who, ironically, they played in a pre-season friendly on Sunday evening – but could not reach an agreement.
Instead, United sensed an opportunity to hijack Chelsea’s deal for Romelu Lukaku, bringing the Belgian to Old Trafford for an initial £75 million.

Asked about Morata in his post-match press conference following United’s penalty shootout win over Real, Mourinho was keen to shut down any questions about having missed out on signing the 24-year-old forward.
‘That subject is interesting for those of you who are talking and writing about Real Madrid, but not me,’ he told reporters in Spanish, having been asked why Morata ended up at Chelsea.

‘I do not care. Alvaro is at Chelsea, and I wish him luck and to be happy.’
Morata took part in his first training session with Chelsea on Sunday, just hours before United took on Real in Santa Clara.
